[clari.biz.economy] Manufactuters recall two unsafe toys

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced
the nationwide recalls of the two toys Thursday -- the Little Triplets
doll and baby bottle set and the Chicco brand Activity Gym.
Henry Gordy International of Plainfield, N.J., is recalling 43,000
of the doll and baby bottle sets because the bottle caps and nipples
pose a choking hazard to small children, the commission said.
The Toys R Us chain based of Paramus, N.J., is recalling 12,000 of
the gyms, which are hung across cribs, because of a strangulation
hazard.
The label on the box of the crib toy recommends its use for
children from 6 months to 18 months. But the CPSC said toys hung across
a crib or a playpen should be removed when a baby reaches 5 months or
begins to push up on its hands and knees. Children able to pull
themselves up can fall across crib toys and be strangled, the CPSC said.
The commission said it knew of no injuries caused by the doll and
baby bottle set or the crib gym. However, it said similar crib toys have
caused the deaths of infants over 5 months old.
The commission recommended parents take the toys away from children
and return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Toys R Us stores
will have a photograph of the crib toy so parents can identify it.
The crib gym, sold nationwide for about $13 each, is attached to a
crib or playpen with a white strap and blue buckles. Suspended on the
strap is a yellow plastic box with a music box inside. The word
``Chicco'' is molded on the yellow plastic, and No. 62930.0 appears in
several places on the toy package.
The Little Triplets set, marked item No. 299, was sold in a clear
plastic blister package and contains three bottles -- two white and one
orange -- and four naked plastic dolls. The toy was sold nationwide from
1988 to 1989 for less than $2.
