Grain:0309pes Winnipeg Grain/Oilseed Review: strong advances in flaxseed Winnipeg--Feb 2--FMN--The Winnipeg market closed mixed today with the oilseeds up and the other grains mostly lower, floor sources said. Activity was light and choppy with position evening ahead of the weekend accounting for the bulk of the trade. Mar canola finished the day 20 Canadian cents higher at 301.40 per tonne. The remaining months settled from 50c to 1.80 higher as an estimated 1,375 contracts traded with 375 hedged. Exporter buying took canola futures higher as did a slow down in country movement, traders said. Weakness was tied to local liquidation ahead of the weekend. Commercials were on both sides of the market. Mar flaxseed moved 8.00 higher to end at 393.00 per tonne. The other months settled 1.50 to 4.20 dlrs higher as 1,075 contracts changed hands with 100 hedged. Spreading made up most of the volume in flaxseed with the tight supply situation accounting for most of the upward move, analysts said. The lack of elevator company hedge offerings also underpinned prices. Commercials were net buyers while locals were on both sides of the market. Mar rye ended unchanged at 118.50 dlrs per tonne. The other months closed 20c higher to 30c lower as 100 contracts traded. Commercial buying was offset by commission house selling leaving rye prices mostly steady, dealers said. The feed grains closed mostly lower in extremely dull trading. Spreading accounted for most of the volume, as weakness in CBT corn futures stimulated light levels of selling, traders said. The lack of country movement was supportive. Commercials were buyers on a scale down basis. Mar Thunder Bay barley futures ended 40c higher at 112.50 as an estimated 1,050 contracts were traded. The remaining months closed 10c lower to 30c higher. Feb western barley ended the session 50 lower at 114.50 dlrs. There were 20 contracts traded today. May oats ended 1.20 lower at 107.30 dlrs. The other months were 40c higher to 1.10 lower as 280 contracts traded. May wheat closed 80c lower at 140.00 dlrs. The remaining months ranged unchanged to 50c lower as 230 contracts traded.
