TOKYO, JAPAN, 1990 JAN 31 (NB) -- Hitachi will produce a 32-bit color IBM-compatible laptop computer in the U.S. The 32-bit machine will be the successor to the current 16-bit HL400 with a TFT (thin film transistor)-type LCD (liquid crystal display) unit, said a Hitachi spokesman who added, the screen size will be larger than the current 6.3-inch size. The PC/AT-compatible machine will run MS-DOS. The new color laptop will be produced on the color TV production line of Hitachi Consumer Products of America or the Dallas factory of Hitachi Semiconductor America. Hitachi will start with a monthly output of 3,000 units, and increase it to 10,000 in one year. (Ken Takahashi/19900201/Press Contact: Hitachi, 03-258-2057)
