[clari.sports.football] Pardee may keep some Glanville staff

HOUSTON (UPI) -- Houston Oilers coach Jack Pardee says he is not
going to sit back and let every holdover assistant from Jerry
Glanville's staff follow the former coach to Atlanta.
``Some of them I plan on keeping,'' Pardee said. ``That's why I
made sure that we sat down and talked, so I could get their feelings and
hear their plans. I think most of them really like Houston and are happy
with the team.
``Thank goodness I've had the benefit of a week between my getting
the job and Jerry's deal. The staff can shape up quickly now.''
Pardee was hired to replace Glanville after Glanville resigned Jan.
6. Glanville was hired Sunday as the Falcons' head coach.
Glanville said Sunday he would start interviewing Falcons
assistants immediately and not go outside the organization until after
determining which ones will stay.
``Whoever we select will know a lot of football,'' he said. ``As to
whether we'll have offensive and defensive coordinators (he handled both
at Houston himself) will depend who comes with us.''
But The Houston Post reported Monday that Glanville would like to
take with him as many coaches from his Oilers staff as possible.
Holdover Oilers assistants under contract for 1990 include Doug
Shively, Floyd Reese, Kim Helton, Richard Smith, Kevin Gilbride and
Frank Novak. The Falcons would need permission from the Oilers to talk
to any of them.
Detroit has denied the Oilers permission to talk with June Jones,
who is under contract as quarterbacks coach with the Lions. Pardee would
like to hire Jones as offensive coordinator.
Two other Houston holdovers, Ray Sherman and Steve Watterson, do
not have contracts for next season and are free to talk to other teams.
Glanville is closest to Shively, Reese, Novak and Watterson.
