PONTIAC, Mich. (UPI) -- The Detroit Lions announced Friday that they
have left 17 players unprotected under the NFL's Plan B Free Agency
System, including starters Ken Dallafior and Jerry Holmes.
Dallafior started the last 11 games at right offensive guard for
the Lions in 1989. Holmes, who led Detroit with six interceptions, was a
starter at cornerback in all 16 games.
Also left unprotected was wide receiver Walter Stanley, who led the
NFL in punt returns by averaging 13.8 yards per kick. He also had 24
catches for 304 yards.
Also on the unprotected list were: wide receivers Stacey Mobley,
Michael Williams and Keith McDonald; offensive linemen Chris Gambol, Joe
Milinichik; Trevor Matich and Steve Mott; defensive backs James Griffin,
John Miller and Bruce McNorton; defensive linemen James Cribbs and
Curtis Green; running back Tony Paige; and linebacker Keith Karpinski.
An unprotected player is unrestricted in his movement and can sign
a contract with any team. Unrestricted free agents have until April 1 to
receive a qualifying offer from another team or their rights revert back
to the original club.
