At what point, if any, can we draw a dividing line between history and current events? Has anyone been reading the amazing (and terrifying) documentation of Lyndon Johnson's 1948 senatorial campaign? It ran in four long parts in the New Yorker in January-early February this year. Like many of the long pieces in that magazine, I suspect, it will soon be released as a book. The account of the transformation of Texas politics is fascinating, the picture of the politician unlovely, and the implications troubling. I'd be glad to hear anybody else's reactions. -- Kevin Berland
