Just the other day (1/14/90), I saw (for about the 8th time) _White Lightning_ on TBS, with Burt Reynolds, Bo Hopkins, and Ned Beatty. There is one good chase scene at the end, with Ned Beatty in pursuit of Burt Reynolds, and another chase/race scene involving Burt, Bo, and a cop; one particularly good device which is used is one car catching up to and passing a train, then cutting across in front of the train down a road which is then blocked by the train's passage. Burt ends up escaping by jumping his car off a hill into a river, and the car lands on a moving barge. See it if you get a chance. -Bill

The most, shall I say, bizzare movie that I've seen with a chase seen in it was an old `70's movie called `Duel'. It was about a guy that was being harrased by a crazy truck driver that was trying to run him off the road. The entire movie took place on the highways. I think that Steven Spielberg directed it. Has any one seen it? -Steve Fonnesbeck

Yes, I have seen the film. It is wild!!! Dennis Weaver does a great job as a scared sh*^less auto driver being chased by a truck driver "on the highway to hell". But the best chase flick (scene) is in 'To Live and Die in LA'. When the two cops get caught within in inner-departmental sting and are driving for their lives. Now that's a chase!!!! Forrest Wade

> "Duel", 1971, Dennis Weaver, directed by Steven Spielberg... Actually, I believe this is the best thing that Spielberg has done yet; taut realistic action without any of the sappy touches that have since become his trademark in the film industry. If you've never seen "Duel" then dig it up and see it! A great film!! > "To Live and Die in LA", 1987 (?) This too has a great chase scene, especially the wild scene of the big rig jack-knifing and "sweeping up" the cars near it on the freeway. An all time favorite film of mine for the cinematography and excellent (Wang Chung) sound track. See it too! I'm amazed in all this discussion of chase scenes that no-one has mentioned one of the most famous of them all; The Blues Brothers! A pretty silly film, it nonetheless has some incredible chase scenes. I seem to recall that "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" also has some particularly good chase scenes, as did "Running Scared", where the two cars in the chase end up on the "T" (?) (overhead train track) and get out just in the nick of time as one car is crushed and mangled by a train flying into the station. -- Dave Taylor Intuitive Systems Mountain View, California taylor@limbo.intuitive.com or {uunet!}{decwrl, apple}!limbo!taylor

"To Live and Die in L.A." certainly has a great chase, as does a film called "The Seven-Ups" (if I recall correctly; its been awhile), which stars Roy Schieder. For a great fun chase, check out "Raising Arizona", with the gun-crazed police, gun-crazed clerk, gun-crazed grocery manager, dog pack, and, of course, the Pampers. What about the 1/2 hour chase scene in "Gone in Sixty Seconds" that one's a classic!! The car thief drives around trashing this car with millions of cops in pursuit. The conclusion to the chase is, he spots a look alike car entering a car wash and deftly switches them. He drives away with a nice new car and the poor lady sees her trashed car rolling out of the car wash!
