[alt.cosuard] HAL PC ARTICLE

DAN.ARSENAULT@p6.f889.n106.z1.fidonet.org (DAN ARSENAULT) (01/12/90)

I guess one could make the argument that thinking that a job worth doing
is worth doing right is a character flaw. I know this is hard to
believe, but when I ran Beta Board I left the sysop page on one night by
mistake. SOme fine fellow paged me a 3 a.m. I was silly enough to get up
and chat with him. I ran as meaningful a board as I could given the
money, time and everything else. Running a board on five floppy drives
like Larry and I did meant at least 30 hours a week maintenance. Some
weirdness amoung the teens made me shut down, but I couldn't have kept
going much longer anyway. Now I sysop a private BBS run for my company's
customers, gatewayed to our LAN. Maintenance is a snap. I'm glad you
remember the those days of yore. I'm even more glad you're working in
COSUARD. I wasn't particularly looking to pick a fight with Nancy, and
said what I did out of respect to the higher aspirations of the group.
I'm not foolish enough to think that the author of that article would
be accepting of criticism, but I'm not here looking for acceptance. I
think the undertaking is a lot more serious than the content of the
article might imply. I think future articles need be better.

Nancy is a friend of mine...I hope YOU are a friend of mine too...Nancy
has a lot of energy and has NEVER said she wouldnt undertake anything
"we" asked her to do. Nancy is NOT now nor has she EVER been a sysop.
Nancy is a user and a supporter of bbs's. Nancy believes 110% in "our
cause" and she is more than willing to put her beliefs in practice by
writing articles such as the one for Hal-PC. Nancy is also a human being
and she did get her feelings hurt by your unasked for remarks, but many
of her friends in COSUARD and people from the echoes have had an
opportunity to say whatever they felt needed to be said. The article has
been written and published. Nancy has been thanked and critized. You
have had your say, she has had opportunites to explain that she is not a
professional writer, but she does not have to hang her head for anything
that she said in that article.
In the opinion of many, it is more than time for this entire discussion
to end.
The officers of COSUARD get together from time to time and we try to
plan how to proceed with unity. It is not uncommom for us to ask each
other for an opinion as NONE of us would DREAM of doing anything to hurt
this effort. Strange as it may seem, we take the time to pat one another
on the back and offer our thanks for the efforts of Glynne, Steve, Paul
and Reginald. In our hearts we all believe that SWB started this and it
is up to all of us to see it to it's conclusion. Unlike Kridner and
cronies, you wont see any of us ask for clarification of our position
before answering simple questions. You're been to the meeting and seen
that we TRY and listen to any and all comments, complaints, suggestions
etc.

We ask you for your help, Dan, and your interest in the ongoing
proceedings. We expect all who read this echo to understand that
certains questions can not be dealt with and we would all LIKE to see
discussion limited to the telephone rate issues and related topics.
I guarantee you that Nancy wont cry herself to sleep if she doesnt win
any new writer awards for her article, but what possible purpose can it
serve to continue with THIS debate?
As you wish, I can see if she will autograph YOUR copy or you can burn
it and dance around the embers during the light of the full moon but
enough, please, it's clearly enough!

..Hey! Zap! Powie! There's a major sociological plus for
bbs's..perhaps a point for COSUARD! Is SWBT being so commercially
crass they would hinder the well-stated need to get Americans
up to computer speed? (You said it real right, the way it hit me.)

I think the earlier point about illiteracy is better.. If FORCES you to
read! Lots of stuff.. Hundreds of K of stuff.. Millions of DUPES...

..Edie, you prompted me to jump in here and agree with you fully, then
add: You'd be amazed how much of the supposedly "learned, solid
science" in university papers and such is pure poppycock, too! The
economic powers that run this ground have more money than most can
understand to spend on promoting their commercial way! As has been said
here, there is no substitute for personal reading, learning and
wheat/chaff sorting. In short, we EACH need to assume personal
responsibility and sort through the trivial stuff. (How ya like THIS
tagline?)........

Edie:
Of course, I'd agree that enough is enough, and what had to be said has
likely been said, but not at the risk of the point being lost or
distorted or swept under some rug. This has not been a matter of
flaming. Nor, as you suggest may be the case, has Dan been responsible
for perpetuating what had gotten disagreeable and redundant about this
business. It reamains the case that there is something to be learned
here relative to Dan's key, and rapidly obscured and misunderstood key
points, which were essentially not relative to just one other
individual. It is thus important that this particular baby not be
dumped with the bathwater. One must wonder if anything that needed to
be learned here really has been learned after all. Otherwise, it will
not get you where you want to go.

Thanks for your reply...I'm grateful that my babbling made some sort of
sense....sometimes I have my doubts! :) I believe that nothing we learn
is wasted...but it's always a challenge sorting through raw data to
reach our OWN conclusions.
To me *calling* bbs's is a HOBBY too, but I couldnt begin to put a price
tag on the joy it has brought me over the years!
Take care...and yeah, I did like your tagline....I get a kick out of a
bunch of them!

I think Steve Conroy said it all a lot better than I ever could and he
is one of the key participants...of course we need to hear the good and
the bad and believe me we *are* paying attention to all comers!

 Thank you for your input!
