MONTREAL (UPI) -- Mike McPhee scored 1:16 into the third period
Saturday night, helping the Montreal Canadiens extend Philadelphia's
winless streak to six games with a 2-2 tie against the Flyers.
Montreal tied the game when McPhee scored his sixth goal of the
season. Claude Lemieux sent over a rebound after goaltender Pete Peeters
stopped a drive from inside the blue line by Jyrki Lumme. With Peeters
falling to the ice, McPhee had no trouble getting the puck into the open
side of the net.
Philadelphia's Dave Poulin opened the scoring when he banged a
rebound past goaltender Brian Hayward at 2:13 of the opening period.
Just 100 seconds later, Hayward left the game after he injured his
right knee stopped a drive. He was replaced by Patrick Roy, who returned
from a four-game absence with the flu.
Stephane Richer tied the game at 5:47 of the first period when he
took a pass from Stephan Lebeau and one-timed a wrist shot through the
legs of Peeters. But Pelle Eklund got a rebound past Roy at 17:37 to put
Philadelphia in front 2-1.
The Flyers failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity in the
second period when defensemen Craig Ludwig and Sylvain Lefebvre were in
the penalty box for Montreal. Roy came up with two excellent saves,
smothering a shot by Scott Mellanby and then stopping a drive by Ron
Sutter with his stick.
