INGLEWOOD, Calif. (UPI) -- Pat Verbeek scored two goals in the first 2:29 of play and Kevin Dineen added two goals to lead the Hartford Whalers to a 6-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings Saturday. The Whalers built up a 4-0 advantage early in the second period, only to watch the Kings reel off the last three goals of the period to pull to 4-3. Hartford pulled away when Dean Evason scored his 11th goal at 1:06 into the third period and Dineen's second goal capped the scoring with 4:42 remaining to give the Whalers the victory. Hartford improved its NHL-best road record to 13-7-2, while the Kings reamined winless over the last six games with five losses and a tie. Verbeek had a break-away goal just 13 seconds into the game to equal a club record for the fastest goal to start a game. Then at 2:29, Verbeek added his 23rd goal of the season on a power play when he deflected in Scott Young's shot. Dineen made it 3-0 on a 15-foot wrist shot with 4:55 left in the first period. Randy Cunneyworth moved Hartford to 4-0 when he knocked in Adam Burt'a shot from five feet in front of goalie Kelly Hrudey at the 1:51 mark of the second period. But 37 seconds later Jay Miller, on a feed from Wayne Gretzky, scored the Kings' first goal. Bob Kudelski's shorthanded goal at 11:46 cut Hartford's lead to t o. Then Gretzky's pass behind the net set up Luc Robitaille's 33rd goal of the year on the power play with 1:38 left in the second period. Gretzky's two assists added to his NHL-leading 92 points, three more than Mario Lemieux of Pittsburgh. Evason's 25-foot wrist shot beat Hrudey on the stick side in the third period. Then Dineen capped the scoring on a breakaway, ramming in a 15-foot backhand shot for his 15th goal of the season.
