NEW YORK (UPI) -- Dave Lowry scored a short-handed goal Wednesday
night to lift the St. Louis Blues into a 2-2 tie with the New York
Rangers.
The Blues' rookie goalkeeper Curtis Joseph, subbing for injured
Vincent Riendieu midway through the first period, combined with Riendieu
to stop 31 shots.
Lowry put a second rebound past Ranger goalie John Vanbiesbrouck,
who was making his first start since January 4. Rick Meagher picked up
the puck at the St. Louis blue line and skated over the Ranger line,
shooting a fifty-footer which Vanbiesboruck stopped. Lowry picked up the
rebound and Vanbiesbrouck made a glove save but still couldn't control
the rebound. Lowry then flipped the second rebound over Vanbiesbrouck to
tie the game at 2-2.
The Rangers scored twice in the first period. Brian Mullen
converted on the power play at 1:43, beating Joseph from the right
faceoff circle. Darren Turcptte made it 2-0 at 12:49, waiting at the
face-off dot to the right of Joseph, then beating him on his short side.
St.Louis, now 3-0-2 in their last five games, got back in the game
when Brett Hull scored his 47th goal during a power play. Peter Zezel
and Adam Oates set up Hull in the face-off circle and his shot bounced
off Ranger defenseman Randy Moller through Vanbiesbrouck's legs.
