WINNIPEG, Manitoba (UPI) -- Dale Hawerchuk scored his 21st goal and added a pair of assists Friday night to help the Winnipeg Jets to an 8-1 blowout of Vancouver and hand the Canucks their fifth straight loss. Winnipeg snapped a four-game winless streak (0-2-2), stretched its unbeaten streak against the Canucks to five (3-0-2) games and moved 18 points ahead of the last place Canucks in the Smythe Division. The Canucks are winless in seven games (0-5-2). Steve Weeks replaced Kirk McLean in the Canucks goal at the start of the third period and was beaten by Teppo Numminen at 6:08, and Gord Donnelly at 7:59 to give Winnipeg a 6-1 lead. Both goals were set up by Hawerchuk. Doug Smail made it 7-1 on a breakaway at 9:39 and Fredrik Olausson completed the scoring on a screened shot at 11:15. Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead at 2:19 of the first period when Dave Ellett unleashed a rocket through a crowd from the point. Ellett was tossed out of the game for high-sticking Dan Quinn at 12:25, but the Canucks failed to score with a two-man advantage for 81 seconds. Jets rookie goaltender Stephan Beauregard frustrated the Canucks in the first period, making great saves on Doug Lidster and Ronnie Stern before Quinn converted Trevor Linden's rebound, on Vancouver's 16th shot, at 16:03. Greg Paslawski's power-play goal at 6:04 of the second period gave Winnipeg a 2-1 lead. Dale Hawerchuk's 21st goal at 9:10 lifted Winnipeg to a 3-1 lead. Hawerchuk rifled a 30-footer past McLean. Defenseman Randy Carlyle picked up the assist, his 600th-career point in the NHL. Paul Fenton upped Winnipeg's lead to 4-1 with 41 seconds remaining in the second period.
