BOSTON (UPI) -- Brian Mullen's 17th goal of the season, at 3:59 of
the third period, lifted the New York Rangers to a 2-1 win Saturday over
the Boston Bruins.
The loss was the Bruins' second straight at Boston Garden, and
second to the Rangers this season.
Mullen scored the winning goal after being knocked to the ice by
Boston's Greg Hawgood. Although referee Bill McCreary called Boston for
a delayed penalty, Mullen scored, beating the Bruins' Reggie Lemelin low
to his stick side, before the power play could begin.
After a scoreless first period, the Bruins took a 1-0 lead 13
seconds into the second period on Cam Neely's 38th goal of the season.
Craig Janney, who later left the game with a strained hip flexor,
intercepted a Ranger pass and took the original shot. Neely slammed home
the rebound.
The Rangers scored a power-play goal at 2:25 of the period to pull
even at 1-1. Bernie Nicholls' shot trickled into the goal line, and
Carey Wilson came through the crease to knock it into the net for his
sixth goal of the year.
Midway through the second period, the Bruins killed off a
double-minor to Bob Cimetta, for instigating a fight with the Rangers'
Paul Broten, and another minor to defenseman Allen Pedersen.
