SPOKANE, Wash. (UPI) -- Spokane Chief Mark Woolf scored a hattrick goal into an empty net in the third period to help the Chiefs coast to a 6-3 victory Saturday over the Portland Winter Hawks. Spokane and Portland are battling for the last playoff spot in the Western Division of the Western Hockey League. Spokane took a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a goal scored by Ray Whitney, his 38th of the year. Portland's Dean Dorchak tied it up early in the second period, but Spokane's Woolf answered by scoring two goals, his 38th and 39th of the year. With a shot late in the second period Portland's Brad Harrison closed the gap to 3-2. Spokane came back and took command in the third period scoring two more goals for a 5-2 score. Woolf scored his third goal of the night into an empty net with only eight seconds left in the game. The game brought Portland to 16-34-2 and Spokane to 21-30-3.
