PITTSBURGH (UPI) -- Former light-heavyweight boxing champion Billy
Conn tried to break up a robbery at a Pittsburgh supermarket.
Conn, 72, and his wife were in a Uni-Mart about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday
when the robber took $80 from the store's cash register.
Conn and the store's manager, Tom Dieker, wrestled the robber to
the floor, stripping him of a sweatshirt and one of his basketball
shoes. But the robber escaped and was still at large.
Conn suffered minor injuries when a newspaper rack fell on his
legs. Dieker suffered a small cut. They both were treated at the scene
by paramedics.
Conn fought Joe Louis for the heavyweight championship in June
1941, but got knocked out in the 13th round.
