PANMUNJOM, Korea (UPI) -- South and North Korean sports officials
met Thursday but failed to reach a final accord on sending a single
Korean team to the 1992 Asian Games to be held in Beijing.
The two sides met for 2 1/2 hours at the truce site of Panmunjom 35
miles north of Seoul but could not iron out differences over a
10-article addendum the South proposed to ensure agreements already
reached for formation of a unified Korean team.
At previous sessions they had agreed on the name of the single
Korean team, its anthem and flag, and on how to pick athletes for the
unified team. The South proposed the addendum hoping to provide for
exchange games and spell out more details about the single team.
The North insisted no addendum was needed and a 10-point agreement
already reached should suffice. The South partly changed its stand and
offered to retract some of the addendum provisions, including one
providing for exchange games, but the North refused.
Following bitter arguments, the sides agreed to meet again on Jan.
22 and 29.
