	Ayrton Senna is considering quitting Formula One racing to join the
Indy circuit in the United States, the French sports daily l'Equipe
reports. The driver is feuding with Formula One authorities and might
join Brazilian compatriot Emerson Fittipaldi on the Indy circuit.

	The Pittsburgh Pirates announced losses of $1,293,926 in 1989,
attributing the deficit to rulings arising from union grievances on free

	SuperSonics star Dale Ellis was arrested for alleged drunken
driving after a one-car accident in downtown Seattle early Friday left

	Big Ten Commissioner James Delaney reprimanded former Michigan

Conference has invited Florida International to become a member
beginning July 1.

	Greg Norman sank a 15-foot eagle putt on the final hole, sealing a

	Detroit running back Barry Sanders and Kansas City linebacker
Derrick Thomas were named the NFC and AFC Rookies of the Year by UPI.
Sanders, who gained a club record 1,470 rushing yards, was a unanimous
choice among 42 writers covering NFC teams. Thomas beat out Denver
running back Bobby Humphrey and Denver safety Steve Atwater.

	Former Detroit Red Wing Bob Probert, convicted of importing cocaine
into the United States from Canada, will be allowed to remain in America
while his appeal of a deportation order is being decided. ... Former
Duquesne basketball star John Moore, 31, has been indicted by a federal
grand jury on charges he made more than $27,000 in fraudulent loans and
kept the money.

	Armin Bittner of West Germany won a World Cup slalom in 1:56.26.
Michael Tritscher of Austria was second (1:56.32) and Italy's Konrad

	Defending champion Ivan Lendl is the top seed in the 128-man field
for the $3 million Australian Open, which begins Monday. Steffi Graf,

the New South Wales tourney. Boris Becker fell to fellow West German
Charlie Steeb while Michigan teenager Amy Frazier reached the semis.

	Three-time Alaska Iditarod winner Susan Butcher held the unofficial
lead of the John Beargrease sled dog marathon for the second day. The
race is named after John Beargrease, who delivered mail by dog sled
along Lake Superior's North Shore from 1887 to 1900. The winner is
expected to finish Saturday afternoon.

	South Korea's Baek In-chul defended his WBA super middleweight
crown with a knockout over Japan's Yoshiaki Tajima. Baek knocked down
the challenger halfway through the second round. Tajima refused to give
up and the fight lasted until he refused to come out for the eighth.

	Nevada-Las Vegas junior guard Anderson Hunt did not dress Saturday
for the  team's game at Temple because of a problem with a school loan.
Joyce Aschenbrenner, an assistant athletic director at UNLV, said in a
statement that a university audit determined Hunt had a loan that has
not yet been fully repaid. In the statement, Hunt, who started UNLV's
first 12 games this season and averaged 15.8 points, said he was
surprised by the problem.
	``I was shocked because this loan is something that I understood
had been repaid since money had been deducted from my scholarship
checks,'' Hunt said. ``I'm confident that school records will indicate
that and that this matter will be cleared up soon.''

	French ski giant Rossignol has lost its American racing director
James Major, little more than six months after he took the helm last
June. Major, the key link between Rossignol's stable of top racers and
the company, chose to quit in the middle of the World Cup season with
Rossignol riding high. Much of the credit for that is due to Major's
work over the summer, ensuring that top racers like Alberto Tomba and
Vreni Schneider were happy with their equipment, rewriting competitor
contracts and signing new talent.
	``I left because of too much politics inside the company,'' the
French-educated Major said. ``The job also involved too much travel and
kept me away from my family.''
	... U.S. ski team racer Edith Thys suffered an apparent concussion
in a fall Saturday during a World Cup women's downhill in Haus, Austria.
Thys, 23, Squaw Valley, Calif., fell just after the midway point where
she was clocked 14th fastest. Team doctor Bob Stanton took Thys, the No.
2 downhill racer on the U.S. women's squad, to a hospital for X-rays.
Maria Walliser of Switzerland won the women's downhill in 1 minute,
37.97 seconds.

	Three-time Alaska Iditarod winner Susan Butcher won the 1990 John
Beargrease sled dog marathon in record time Saturday, finishing the
grueling 475-mile race in 87 hours, 15 minutes and 38 seconds and
shaving approximately 10 hours off last year's record time. The
Minnesota event is named after John Beargrease, who delivered mail by
dog sled along Lake Superior's North Shore from 1887 to 1900.

	Aston Villa moved into a tie with Liverpool for first place in the
English  League. Villa defeated Charlton 2-0 to stretch its unbeaten
streak to seven matches. Derek Mountfield scored in the fourth minute,
and an own goal by defender Joe McLaughlin in the 57th minute sealed
Villa's fifth road victory.Liverpool battled to a 2-2 draw at home with
Luton, playing its first game under new coach Jim Ryan.

	Abdi Bile of Somalia, the 1987 world champion at 1,500 meters, will
run the 1,000 meters Feb. 2 at the Panasonic Millrose Games in New York.
Sammy Koskei, five-time meet champion in the event, and Ocky Clark will
be Bile's chief competitors. Bile, heavily favored to win the 1988
Olympic 1,500 until sustaining a stress fracture, returned last year to
clock outdoor-best times in the 1,000 and 1,500 meters and the mile. He
also won the 1,500 World Cup title in Barcelona, Spain.

	Temple Athletic Director Charlie Theokas Sunday declared center
Duane Causwell and Joseph Robinson academically ineligible for the
remainder of the season. Causwell averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds in
12 games as a starter. Robinson, a walk-on freshman, played in two games
this season. ... Senior Derrick Coleman of Syracuse was named The Big
East Player of the Week after totaling 44 points and 32 rebounds last
week in victories over St. John's and Boston College.

	Pittsburgh freshman defensive end Keith Hamilton will decide in the
next two weeks whether he will transfer because of the recent firing of
defensive line coach Frank D'Alonzo, who Hamilton calls ``a really good
friend of mine.'' The Panthers are undergoing changes in their football
program after the firing of head coach Mike Gottfried in December.

	Australian Rodger Davis used an eagle at the second hole of a
sudden death playoff to defeat Curtis Strange in the Daikyo Palm Meadows
Cup in Australia. After hitting a driver on the par-5 18th hole, Davis
struck a 3-iron which carried 260 yards and stopped 15 feet from the
pin. Davis made the putt and earned $110,000.

	The $250,000-added Blue Grass Stakes for three-year-olds will
highlight 16 stakes races worth a record $1,525,000 that will be run
during Keeneland's 15-day spring meeting starting April 6 in Lexington,
Ky. The 1 1/8-mile race will be run April 14, three weeks before the
Kentucky Derby. Eighteen horses, including Alysheba, Gato Del Sol and
Spectacular Bid, have used the Blue Grass Stakes as a stepping stone to
victory in the Kentucky Derby. ... Minnesota Racing Commission chairman
Ralph Strangis says he expects a deal for the sale of Canterbury Downs
will be completed early this week. Strangis attended a meeting Saturday
at which a lawyer for New Jersey investor John Aglialoro outlined a
proposal for the track's sale.

	East Germany claimed all but one title in the European Luge
Championships in Igls, Austria. In the team events Sunday, East Germany
collected 138 points to win the title, followed by West Germany with 123
points. Georg Hackl of West Germany captured the men's singles title
Friday.

	Paul Pilkington of Roy, Utah, captured the Houston-Tenneco Marathon
in 2:11:13. Maria Trujillo, of Phoenix, came in first for the women,
finishing the 26-mile, 385-yard event in 2:32:55. ... England's Mark
King won the Scottish Cross Country Union centenary international
10-kilometer race in Irvine, Scotland. King clocked 32 minutes, 24
seconds to beat Sweden's Hakon Borjesson, who finished in 32:27.

	Austrian Richard Kroell, in his second year on the World Cup
circuit, led an Austrian sweep of the top four places in a giant slalom
in Val Badia, Italy. Kroell finished with an aggregate time of 2
minutes, 26.55 seconds. Guenther Mader was second down the Gran Risa
course in 2:26.63. Hubert Strolz and double world champion Rudolf
Nierlich tied for third in 2:26.77.

	Olympia of Paraguay moved into the semifinals of the Jawaharlal
Nehru International soccer championship with a 1-0 victory over East
Bengal of India. Olympia will next face Lingby of Denmark, which
defeated Indian national champions Salgaonkar 3-0 in the opening match.

	Frenchman Yannick Noah defeated West German Carl-Uwe Steeb, 5-7,
6-3, 6-4, to win the $125,000 New South Wales Open in Sydney, Australia.

Paulus, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, in the women's final.

	Debbie Bowker is the women's leader with 20 points after the first
two meets of the $200,000 Mobil Indoor Grand Prix. Bowker won the 1,500
meters Friday at the Hamilton Spectator Indoor Games and collected 10
points for her victory in the mile at the K of C Saskatchewan Indoor
Games. Freddie Williams of Canada is the men's leader with 13 points.
The 11-meet Grand Prix will end at the Mobil Indoor Championships Feb.

	The Texas Rangers agreed to terms with catcher Geno Petralli on a

	Sidney Moncrief, who led the Milwaukee Bucks to the playoffs in

a former city schoolboy star, to a 10-day contract. Lloyd, a 30-year-old

basketball coach LaRue Fields announced her resignation, saying she will

	Reno, Nev., will host the 1990 USA-Italy amateur boxing dual meet

	Florida State has suspended its two leading scorers -- center Irving
Thomas and guard Tharon Mayes. Officials would not elaborate on the
suspensions, saying only that they related to ``a minor situation
involving ethics and standards.'' ... Tom Jones, football coach at Lock
Haven the past three seasons, resigned to enter private business. No
decision was made on a replacement. ... Jim Hofher, who quarterbacked
Cornell from 1976 to 1978, was named coach at the school. Hofher, 32,
comes from Tennessee, where he was quarterback coach.

	Denver running back Tony Dorsett said he has ``come to grips'' with
the fact he will never play another down of football. Dorsett suffered a
severe knee injury during the Broncos' training camp last August and
underwent ligament surgery. Dorsett, who will turn 36 next month, said
he knew from the moment he injured his knee that his career was over.
... Veteran Green Bay linebacker John Anderson, a 1978 first-round draft
pick from Michigan, announced his retirement after 12 seasons with the
Packers.

	New York Islanders center Pat LaFontaine, who led all NHL scorers

... Minnesota North Stars left wing Curt Fraser will be out at least six
weeks after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder.
Fraser's surgery was the result of a number of injuries over his 12-year
NHL career.

	Legendary sportscasters Mel Allen, Red Barber and Marty Glickman
were among 21 people chosen as charter members of the New York Sports

	Thomas Gustafson, triple Olympic champion and winner of the 1988
World and European Championships, failed to qualify for the European
Speedskating Championships. Gustafson has been in a slump recently and

	Tigers pitcher Jack Morris signed a 2-year contract worth $4.2
million. In an unusual provision, the second year of the contract will
be at the player's option, not the club's. ... The Philadelphia Phillies

a three-year contract worth $4.75 million. The Phillies also signed
infielder-outfielder Randy Ready and pitcher Jason Grimsley to  one-year

	Michael Jordan, a two-time slam dunk champion, will challenge

Satterfield of Furman. ... The Atlantic 10, faced with the loss of Penn

... Lawrence Funderburke, who left Indiana after being kicked out of
practice by Coach Bob Knight in December, is enrolled at St. Catharine
College, a Kentucky junior college with about 250 students. He has
inquired about transferring to Kentucky or Missouri, but Indiana refuses
to release him from his letter of intent. ... Five University of Texas
football players have flunked out of school for the spring semester and
at least three freshmen players are on scholastic probation. The
academic casualties are Bo Robinson, a freshman defensive end; Paul
Moriarty, a redshirt freshman defensive tackle; Keith Cash, a junior

	New Hampshire lawmakers rejected a plan to introduce legalized

start in New Zealand Wednesday facing last-minute problems. The swimming

been ignored. ... South and North Korea met but failed to reach an

Hills, N.J., may have ended her tennis career. Austin, 26, suffered a

	The Le Mans 24-hour race will not be held this year because
organizers failed to meet Wednesday's deadline set by auto racing
authorities. ... Racing's governing body threatened to suspend the
McLaren-Honda Formula One team if Ayrton Senna's $100,000 fine isn't
paid by Thursday night. The Brazilian driver was disqualified from the
Japanese Grand Prix last October.

	The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent infielder Wally Backman to

	Two bar bouncers pleaded not guilty of trying to extort $50,000
from SuperSonics star Dale Ellis. The men worked at a Seattle bar Ellis

for an estimated $2 million. The Reds said they are continuing to talk
with Browning about the possibililty of agreeing on a multi-year

Mark Clear to a 1-year contract and added him to their 40-man roster,
the team announced. ... Philadelphia shortstop Dickie Thon signed a
1-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies worth $1.1 million plus

	The Seattle SuperSonics signed seven-year veteran guard Quintin
Dailey to a 10-day contract to replace the injured Sedale Threatt,

Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz was named the NBA's Player of the Month
Friday after averaging 34.3 points and 10.4 rebounds while shooting .625

a 144-96 victory over Milwaukee Jan. 27. ... Jon Spoelstra resigned as
president and general manager of the Denver Nuggets, just three months
after he was hired to stabilize the team's front office. Spoelstra said

the Nuggets' top executive, will resume his duties as general manager.

	Stephen Halas, grandson of the late George ``Papa Bear'' Halas Sr.,
who founded the Chicago Bears, may have rescued his mother's suburban
house in north Chicago from creditors by bidding $400,000 for the house
at a sheriff's sale. Stephen Halas made a $40,000 downpayment on the
house owned by Therese M. Halas. Bank officials said the Halas family
must come up with the remaining 90 percent of the bid by Friday in order
to secure the three-bedroom home from creditors.

	An arbitrator has awarded Kansas City Royals slugger Bo Jackson a
one-year contract worth $1 million, about $900,000 less than the
outfielder sought for 1990. The hearing was heard Friday in Los Angeles.
Jackson hit 32 home runs and had 105 RBI in 1989.

	Gustav Weder and Bruno Gerber of Switzerland fought off a strong
bid by two East German teams to win the World Two Man Bobsleighing
Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The Swiss team won three of

	A shakeup in the University of Pittsburgh coaching staff is one of
several reasons that convinced defensive tackle Marc Spindler to turn
pro. Spindler confirmed he will enter the NFL draft because, in part,

D'Alonzo were fired. ... Pittsburgh junior forward Brian Shorter, who
has paced the Panthers to four victories in five games, was named Big
East-Dodge Player of the Week. Shorter, the conference's leading scorer,

forward Nadav Henefeld was named Big East-Plymouth Rookie of the Week.

	Austrian Helmut Heoflehner claimed his third men's World Cup
downhill victory in eight days, triumphing over a course in Cortina
d'Ampezzo, Italy, he conquered six years ago. Hoeflehner, winner of a

1:44.57. Norway's Atle Skaardal and Franz Heinzer of Switzerland tied
for second at 1:44.77. ... Katrin Gutensohn, West Germany's Austrian
recruit, completed a double when she won the second women's World Cup
downhill of the weekend in Veysonnaz, Switzerland. Gutensohn raced the
course in 1:17.86, a slim margin of 19-100ths ahead of France's Carole
Merle. Karin Dedler of West Germany was third. ... Maria Walliser, a
fixture on the Swiss team for the past 10 years, announced she will
retire at the end of the World Cup season in March. Walliser, 27, never
won an Olympic gold, but she claimed a silver in the 1984 downhill at

Mechelen stumbled to its first loss of the season with a 3-0 loss
against FC Brugge in the top Belgian League match. Anderlecht remained

Racing Mechelen. ... Dutch striker Pieter Den Boer scored an 81st-minute

	Steffi Graf crushed Arantxa Sanchez, 6-1, 6-2, to win the $350,000
Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Graf, who struggled to win the Australian
Open in Melbourne just over a week ago, opened play with a pair of aces
and was never threatened in the 51-minute match. Sanchez, who upset Graf
in the final of the 1989 French Open, won only one point in the first
three games and didn't hold serve until the fourth game.

	Lyudmila Narozhilenko clocked 7.71 seconds to set a world indoor
record in the women's 60-meter hurdles at the Soviet Indoor
Championships in Chelyabinsk. The time bettered the old record of 7.73
held by East Germany's Cornelia Oschkenat. In a major upset, Grigory
Yegorov defeated world record-holder and Olympic champion Sergei Bubka.
Yegorov cleared 19 feet, 2 1/4 inches.
