DALLAS (UPI) -- Karl Malone's 42 points carried the Utah Jazz to a 109-99 victory Saturday night over the Dallas Mavericks. The Jazz, 23-11, won their third game in a row while Dallas lost its third straight to fall to 17-18. Utah led 98-91 with 3:37 in the game and withstood a Dallas comeback led by Adrian Dantley, who tossed in 12 of his season-high 30 points for the Mavericks in the fourth quarter. Dallas closed the gap to 104-99 with 28 seconds remaining when the Mavericks were called for a foul on a trap play. Dallas coach Richie Adubato was called for two technical fouls as he protested the call and was ejected from the game. John Stockton, who scored 20 points, made both technical free throws plus one foul shot to give Utah a 107-99 advantage and seal the victory. The Mavericks got off to a 10-2 lead with 8:16 left in the first quarter behind Dantley and Rolando Blackman, who had 9 opening-period points. Stockson had 9 points and Malone 8 to lead Utah in the first quarter. Malone scored 10 more points in the second period to lead the Jazz. Herb Williams, starting because Sam Perkins was out with the flu, had eight points for Dallas in the quarter and at halftime Dallas held a 48-47 lead. Malone scored 15 points for Utah in the third quarter to key a Jazz 13-2 run and a 71-61 lead with 4:46 left in the third period. The Mavericks fought back and trailed 81-77 at the end of the third quarter.
