DALLAS (UPI) -- The Dallas Mavericks have signed guard Kelvin Upshaw to a second 10-day contract, the team announced Tuesday. Upshaw, 27, signed the original 10-day contract Saturday, Jan. 6. The new agreement began immediately. The 6-foot-2 guard saw his first action with the Mavericks Monday at Denver, scoring 2 points late in the game. Upshaw averaged 2 points a game in 14 games with the Boston Celtics this season before being waived Dec. 24. He took the roster spot vacated when the Mavericks waived Michael Williams the same day. Prior to Upshaw's signing, Dallas had been using an 11-man roster - one under the NBA limit - in all but six games since Roy Tarpley was suspended Nov. 6 after being arrested for drunken driving. Tarpley's career has been in jeopardy since 1987 because of alcohol and drug abuse. NBA rules state that 10-day contracts may be used only to replace players who are on the injured or suspended lists. A player may sign no more than two 10-day contracts with a team.
