NEW YORK (UPI) -- Patrick Ewing had 38 points, 17 of them in the decisive fourth quarter Saturday, to lead the New York Knicks to a 112-98 victory over the Indiana Pacers. With the score tied at 75-75 at the end of three quarters, the Knicks managed three times to take two-point leads, only to have the Pacers tie the scoreagain. Finally with 7:40 left Ewing hit a hook shot on a pass from Mark Jackson to give New York an 83-81 lead. Ewing took charge the rest of the way, scoring five additional points for seven points in a row to make the score 88-81 New York with 6:18 to go. Charles Oakley, who had 14 points and 16 rebounds, hit a layup to cap a nine-point Knicks run and mount the lead to 90-81. Indiana's Reggie Miller hit for 31 points, while Detlef Schrempf and Vern Fleming had 16 apiece. Rik Smits, who guarded Ewing, had 14 and fouled out in the middle of Ewing's decisive run. Chuck Person had 13. For the Knicks, Gerald Wilkins had 19, Johnny Newman 15, and Jackson 13. Rod Strickland had ten and played a total of 19 minutes compared to Jackson's 37. At one juncture the two played together in the backcourt. The victory gave the Knicks a 19-2 record at Madison Square Garden, and left Indiana with five consecutive losses and a 23-23 record after a l9-9 start.
