----------------------------Original message---------------------------- How have other libraries adapted to sharing space with Academic computer clusters? Over the years there have been various arrangements of VAX computer terminals and microcomputers in our library. A large cluster of terminals, MACS and IBM:s is currently located in prime space on the 1st floor. The cluster, one of six on campus, is run by Academic computing. and is used mainly by students for writing papers, working on programs and connecting with several VAX minicomputers. The VAXes are located in the library basement and are run by Central computing services. The library staff would like to be able to make use of this prime space to consolidate services and open up space for needed collection expansion on other floors, etc. However, we would like to work it out so both functions are served and some synergy derived, especially since the library-s catalog is soon to be placed on-line. The notion of scholar's workstations is intriguing, but how have other libraries really worked this general scenario out? Physically? Politically? Char!ie McNeil S.E. Mass. U. Library N.
