----------------------------Original message---------------------------- To clarify my last note regarding ICPSR's production of datasets in the CD format. Peter M. Joftis, Director of ICPSR, responded to me after the last note I sent to PACS-L. We have exchanged several notes. He noted that "we are very anxious to move in the CDROM area but are uncertain about the best product to offer either in terms of what materials should be on it or how sophisticated it should be." (pmj@icpsr2.icpsr.umich.edu) He also stressed that no pricing structure has yet been arrived upon for CD products. Also, Phil Schrodt (Political Science, U. Kansas), a member of an advisory board to the ICPSR sent the following: - - - - - "The ICPSR is certainly being strongly encouraged by _some_ members of its facilities advisory board to produce a CD-ROM with the "ICPSR Greatest Hits" but as of October they were still only thinking about it, so the existance of such an item comes as a bit of a surprise to me (I'm on the aforementioned board, but we are just advisory). - TEXT DELETED HERE - The figures I've come up with would point to a price of around $25 in lots of 100-200, but that would be sufficient to get a goodly percentage of the most commonly used ICPSR data sets, plus machine readable documentation where it exists." (SCHRODT@UKANVM) - - - - - In short, the CDROM product our faculty member has *was not* produced by the ICPSR although they are exploring the possibility. Our faculty member was mistaken in believing it was an ICPSR product, but the issues still exist here. I've got a faculty member with an optical product who wants to load data to the mainframe, and he's looking at the library as an avenue to those ends. I think we are seeing the beginning of this... - Craig A. Summerhill SUMMERHI@WSUVM1 Assistant Systems Librarian SUMMERHI@wsuvm1.csc.wsu.edu Washington State University 134.121.1.39
