With regard to the discussion on the priority of "discovery" of M,
it occurs to me that perhaps Benoit Mandelbrot himself would like
to make a comment or two. The IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Ctr.
in Yorktown Heights is node YKTVMV on BITNET. Perhaps some member
of FRAC-L at this node could persuade professor Mandelbrot to
assist us in sorting out the historical facts? This might seem
more productive (and interesting) than having third parties (such
as myself) discuss this subject from a viewpoint of ignorance.
