I would refer anyone having this sort of difficulty to the appropriate System Commands manual for their version of MVS. In my case (MVS/ESA) I use IBM manual GC28-1826-2. In particular review the sections on display unit, display M (system configuration info) for CHP and dev. Vary command for unit and path and config for the CHP. I have responded in for detail to the original poster. This is more than RTFM because somtimes it's a case of WHICH FM! ;-).
