[bit.listserv.i-amiga] Rumors

So what's the latest word concerning Hewlett-Packard's interest in purchasing C
ommodore? It's been an on-again, off-again situation for some time, some saying
that HP is very interested, others saying they are only casual in their evalua
tion. What's the story?

Considering that H-P just rolled out a huge new line of workstations,
it seems rather unlikely on that end.
Considering that C-A is turning itself around and is doing MUCH
better, that is rather unlikely.
Considering that this rumor appears every three months, I think it's
the BBS rumor theory.

BBS Rumor Theory: A long time ago Congress considered legislation to
tax modem usage. This was a real event. Quickly almost every BBS
carried messages saying "Write your congressperson and tell them to
vote it down! The the FCC to vote it down!". None of these messages
had dates on them.  As a result, someone sees these old messages;
since it doesn't have a date on it (or they ignore the date) they
think it's still true and post it somewhere else. This somewhere
else now has the same (out of date) message with a newer date on it.
Now, about every 3 months I get email from a friend saying "Hey look
at this! We gotta write to our congressperson!"

In the Modem-Tax case, it would have helped if the messages included
"write letters until xxxxx date" or "the bill is number xxxxx" (the
numbers include the year that they are introduced.

The same thing happens with "HP to buy Amiga" rumors. All this
because a number of companies THOUGHT of buying Amiga, but Commodore
bought them; and since then no body else has tried.

Tom

P.S. Hence the name, "Commodore-Amiga".

Tom Limoncelli The computer industry should spend more time in front of
tlimonce@drew.edu (new) their computers. Remember when 'Look & Feel'
tlimonce@drew.Bitnet was what you tried to do on a date?

You say Commodore has turned itself around. Has it? From talking with a local A
miga dealer, sales piked up somewhat, but not dramatically. Everyone from IBM o
n down is laying off people left and right. What does CBM have for solid number
s?
