Where in the WORLD did you hear THIS? Commodore has announced many
times on comp.sys.amiga that 1.4 will run JUST FINE on an A1000.

I've seen rumors that KS 1.4 will be in a 512K ROM instead of a
256K ROM, but this has *NEVER* been confirmed nor announced by Commodore.
In fact, about a year ago, Commodore denied it on comp.sys.amiga.

You missed the critical qualifiers:

>>additional memory.

According to what I've read in comp.os.amiga (and .tech),
WorkBench routines will not included in the KickStart 1.4 ROM, since they
needed the room for the FastFileSystem code.
1.2 and 1.3 LoadWB just calls ROM subroutines.
1.4 LoadWB will have to load entirely from disk.
As a result, 1.4 uses additional disk space and main memory on
ALL systems that use WorkBench, not just A1000s.
(Of course, if you don't use WorkBench, you can recover that space :-)

In 1.2 and 1.3, FFS is only loaded if you need it: floppy only
systems don't have to "waste" memory because of something they don't use.

I do agree that, like most sales blurbs, the wording of the posting did
encourage A1000 owners to jump to the worst possible conclusion.
Personally I find such practices reprehensible.

As for 512K ROMS, presumably those are needed for the mythical A3000 ;-)

Actually the 500, and 2000 support 512K of ROM, its just the current
version is in 256K ROMS. It's entirely possible that with 1.4 with all
of its bells and whistles Commodore will choose to go to 512K ROMs so it
all fits. The 1000 Kickstart disk could be EASILY set up to load what
it can in the WCS, and the rest in RAM.

To me, this is what the message from DVS DID say. I find it possible, even
likely, that later versions of the Amiga OS will use 512K ROMs. These
versions will run on a 1000 but will take up 'normal' RAM. (- the 256K
that will fit in WCS). So **like the message said*** the board will allow
running 1.4 (or whatever uses a 512K ROM) "without using extra RAM".

To me this feature isn't evil salesmanship, it is salesmanship of a forward
looking and well thought out feature.

I have NO affiliation with DVS, just an opinion (and a 1000).
