RDAVIS@UTKVX (Reid M. Davis, UTK) (01/12/90)
Dear fellow pilgrims, I have been having a few problems communicating with the CHRISTIA listserver and have finally discovered what the problem is. Some of you may be having the same trouble, unknowingly, so I hope you won't mind if I post a little technical information. My BITNET address is at the node UTKVX (i.e. the VaX cluster at the Univ. of Tenn. at Knoxville). Mail sent to that node reaches me just fine. _However_, UTKVX is, as I said, a vax cluster--that is, there are four different vaxes (namely UTKVX1, UTKVX2, UTKVX3, and UTKVX4) which can (I think) be addressed individually (for BITNET purposes) but which normally all hide under the group name UTKVX. When I log on to the system I may choose which of the four vaxes I want to work on or I may let the system assign one to me (for most purposes the latter option is better because the system then has a chance to balance out the user load among the vaxes). Normally it doesn't matter which vax I am on because they all have access to the same resources (including my area of memory on the disk). In other words, the four vaxes act more-or-less as if they were one big computer rather than four separate computers (I have one account--not four). Now it turns out that when I subscribed to CHRISTIA, the listserver read my e-mail address as RDAVIS@UTKVX2 (so I happened to be on vax #2 that day). Since that time I have begun to do most of my work on UTKVX3. I have finally discovered that the listserver doesn't know that RDAVIS@UTKVX2 is also RDAVIS@UTKVX3. Thus the listserver ignores any command that I send from UTKVX3 (and probably any postings to CHRISTIA as well). I had heard of this problem before, but I didn't realize it was affecting me until today when the listserver responded to one of my commands by telling me that I was not a subscriber to CHRISTIA (this despite the fact that I have received over 60 messages from CHRISTIA since yesterday!! :-) ) Now I finally understand why some of my postings appeared and some of them didn't--it all depended on the vax I was on. Anyway, I now have everything moved to UTKVX3 and should have no more trouble. I hope that this info will prove useful to any of you who have been having similar problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Now, I made a posting the other day which I don't think has appeared on the list. Please forgive me if I am duplicating myself by repeating it below, but it is a matter of some importance to me. Thanks for your patience. Your fellow pilgrim, Reid M. Davis ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear fellow pilgrims, I have a friend at the university of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado who is having a hard time finding any christians there. She lives on campus and is not able to drive. Do any of you know a Believer (or a church or christian group) on or near compus whom she might get in touch with? I think she would be helped most by finding a few people who would befriend her, spend time with her, and gently encourage her toward a sound and healthy faith in Christ. I would appreciate any help you can give; you may post answers directly to me at BITNET%"RDAVIS@UTKVX". With many thanks, Reid M. Davis
