They are unrelated, independant events. Examination of rocks from the mid Atlantic fissure, where the crust is pulling apart (even now), causing lines of lava to flow up and spread out, and then harden with the iron in it lined up according to the direction and strength of the earth's magnetic field at that point in time, show that the magnetic field has been occilating (going up and down), and has not been on a steady decline, as in the concentration of radioactive isotopes.
