You can have multiple (up to 4) network cards in the server. They all can be different. All workstations can have different cards too as long as you use the right drivers. Of course, I would not want to be the one supporting a network with a great variety of network cards. Typically the server card is a more robust card (16 or 32 bit) while the workstation is usually an 8 or 16 bitter.
