[bit.listserv.novell] NW386 server hangs

CHAPMAN@NYUACF.BITNET (02/08/90)

I am having severe problems with running NW386. After booting, the server
console will hang anytime within an hour or two. Users can continue to use
the system for a while before they get no response. When the console hangs,
PSERVER ceases functionning. The system will hang whether or not PSERVER is
loaded.

Model 80, 4 meg, 300 mb Maxtor, 300 mb Core (initially mirrored, now just
we're running off the Maxtor alone although the CORE is still in the machine);
IBM disk controller; NE/2 ethernet bd; OS econfig-ed for Ethernet packets;
approx 400 user accounts; 125 megabytes of files; lots of non-Novell traffic
on our ethernet; subdirectory tree depth does not exceed 100 levels.

The machine initially ran well for several weeks of testing; upon rebooting
one day, the machine showed a VGA problem. The system continued to run well,
although it may have crashed once. It may also have been powered down once
when no one was using it actively. To fix the VGA problem, the mother board
was replaced. Since then, the situation is as described above.

IBM diagnostics show no problems with the machine; it seems to run perfectly
under DOS. Other diagnostics for testing the machine (memory etc) show no
problems.

One recurrent problem which showed upon on boot was with the file Q_0007.SRV
in the SYSTEM\Q0000007.QDR directory. It kept coming up as the wrong size
(or something; I'm afraid I don't have the msg handy). Removing the print
server I set up and reinstalling seems to have eliminated this file.

I have purged all files; run bindfix; run vrepair; reinstalled the utilities;
obtained the latest versions of stuff from Netwire (e.g. PSERVER); tested the
NE/2 board in a workstation; add 4 megs to get to 8 megs. No dice.

Are there any startup configuration options I could try? Any other suggestions?

Otherwise seems to me I have to assume hardware problems, and try to get
another new motherboard.

Any suggestions?
