>>>> Using the filename 'NEXT' causes Netware to hang ' Not only does the four-character word NEXT hang a server, it seems to be any four letter word starting with 'NE'. We had a file on the server called NEIL which would hang any workstation consistently if accessed. I think this problem is related to the reserved word 'NETW' in the Netware shell. Any other experiences with this? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tony Townsend | Bitnet : adt@virginia.edu Microcomputer Support Coordinator | Bellnet : 804-924-7567 Academic Computing Center | USPSnet : Gilmer Hall University of Virginia | Charlottesville, VA | 22903 -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tony, "Reserved words in NetWare": neither directory nor filenames of construction NE?? cause problems here, on workstation or file server. Using DOS 3.30. I think you may need to supply testing conditions for the effect to be verified elsewhere (a la cold fusion). Joe D.

I have had problems like Tony describes with a file named "NEWS" on a IBM 50Z, DOS 3.3, NetWare ADV 2.15 Rev A. I, however, cannot reproduce it. I'll say though I tried to reproduce it on Rev C, not Rev A. But, nevertheless, I too have seen this problem Glen Kauffman University of California, Irvine gkauffma@orion.oac.uci.edu

Our problems related to the filename "NEXT" cannot be related to hidden files. as soon as NET3 is loaded. Charles E. Finney University of Iowa

Here's some more info on the problem NetWare seems to have with
files with four-letter names starting with 'NE'.
The Novell Technical Info DataBase lists 'NETW' as a reserved
word. If you examine your list of installed device drivers after
IPX and NETx are loaded, you can see a driver containing those
letters.
Here's a listing of what of versions, etc. (from Novell's NVER):
---------------------------------------------------------------
IPX Version: 2.01
SPX Version: 1.01
LAN Driver: Packet Driver V2.01 (890427) BYU Copyright 1989 V1.00
Packet Driver Interface. Find Interrupt.
Shell: V2.15 Rev. C
DOS: MSDOS V4.00 on IBM_PC
FileServer: ACC1
Novell SFT NetWare 286 TTS V2.15 Rev. C (08/22/89)
FileServer: ACC3
Novell SFT NetWare 286 TTS V2.15 Rev. C (08/22/89)

I think it's a bug, but then that's easy for me to say.
