I have four Seagate 4096 drives running in file servers. One has been running for over 3 years without a bip in a PC/AT. I never turn them off; I try and keep them at a reasonable constant temperature.

A year ago I was considering Seagate 4096 drives for 5 of our servers since it was a fairly large drive supported by our old Zenith 248 setup. Our local computer store that supports many Novell networks recommended against it. He said the 4096 drives either fail during compsurf or within a short time compared with some other brands. I bought 72mb CDC drives and they have been great. Over the past 6 years I have had 1 four year old 40mb CDC drive fail in a server. Four Seagate 40mb drives have failed. They generally don't last a year. I always replace them with CDC drives. I will not put another Seagate drive in a server. I have had two Micro Science 40mb drives running for two years without problems. Dan Abts Academic Computing Services Univ. of WI - La Crosse ABTSACS@UWLAX.EDU ABTSACS@UWLAX.BITNET
