At 2 p.m. this afternoon (1 Feb), Voice of America's Director, Richard Carlson, announced the termination of 6 VOA Language Services: Swahili, Lao, Greek, Turkish, Slovene and Uzbek. The reason: insufficient funds in the FY 1990 budget. The decision will eliminate 57 staff positions. According to a person who attended the meeting, the decision was made to eliminate specific, lower priority services, rather than weaken the broadcasting operation generally through across-the-board cutbacks. The 6 cancelled services will close down April 1st. -- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Robert Horvitz, Executive Secretary ANARC BBS: 1-913-345-1978 Association of North American Radio Clubs Compuserve: 76210,517 P.O.
