[bitnet.swl-l] Sony- Antenna

nrg@BBN.COM> (02/02/90)

I would like to know how good is the AN-1 antenna for the SONY-2010.
Is it any better than the wire antenna provided with the set.

I bought one to use with my SONY 2010. I find that it helps to get the very
weak stations, but on the stronger ones it doesn't help the clarity much.
I suppose the AGC in the radio is pretty effective and tends to even things
out a bit. I am not using mine outdoors, as these condos where I live have
a neighborhood association that regulates things like that (%*#$ totalitarians!)
I plan on moving to a real house soon (in a couple of months) and plan on
setting up some real antennage!

I have both a Sony AN-1 and a Datong AD-370. The AN-1 is a nice antenna
for use with a portable radio -- it comes with adapters to fit various
kinds of portable radios, and it has relatively limited amplification to
avoid overloading the receiver. It also looks very nice, and comes with
a mounting bracket that can be installed a variety of different ways.

It is nowhere near as sensitive as the AD-370, though. The drawback
to the AD-370 is that it will overload small portable radios (but it
has a button to turn off the preamplifier in that case).

Overall I think the AN-1 is well-optimized to small portables, and is
certainly a lot better than a wire antenna, at least for limited-space use.

$119.95 in the Grove catalog that came a couple of days ago.
