Here is a short extract from the new book "Beating the system (hackers, phreakers and electronic spies)" by O.Bowcott and S.Hamilton, published by Bloomsbury, London [ISBN 0-7475-0513-6] The hacker is at once an explorer, an investigator, a trespasser and a nuisance. He or she may develop into a voyeur, a burglar, a vandal, a spy or an exposer of errors. There is nothing new in these occupations. However, because they are carried out within the context of expanding electronic networks, which are not well understood by a largely technophobic population, the hacker has emerged as a mysterious and powerful figure, a latterday sorcerer who arouses fear and loathing as well as admiration and awe. A very interesting book, at 7.99 pounds. Costas Krallis G7AHN E-Mail: {uunet,unido,hplabs,mcvax,ariadne}!ukc!cix!g7ahn

I resent that...
