[alt.hackers] Test / ASPC hack

buddington-paul@CS.YALE.EDU (Paul Buddington) (02/23/91)

Note:
This is my second try - I think I chose the wrong vocabulary for the
first one.

This is my first time posting to any group - I just learned how to about
10 minutes and 1 attempt ago; but I figured, what the heck, why not
start with a challenge?

ObHack: The other day I ran into a problem with a PC-compatible using
AppleShare PC software (for AppleTalk networks). Evidently, the software
detected another network driver in memory at boot-up, and this error
persisted even when I removed everything from CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT. So I DEBUGed the program (I didn't have any real tools with
me) and located the test for the network driver. By NOPing a few bytes,
I managed to convince the software to load regardless of whether any other
drivers were installed. I know, it's a very simple hack, but it works and
it means I don't have to go back there anymore.

BTW, if this works, it really is pretty simple to post to this group . . .
although I imagine it does keep out a fair amount of people who don't have
anything useful to contribute. If I can figure it out within several
minutes of first reading the Pnews manual, it shouldn't take any real
hacker too long.
