Hi. I would like to share with you my latest hack. My work place
has only a few unix machines with GUIs. They shaft me with a stupid
wyse50 terminal. Ok, I know that wyse is a great terminal, but why can't
I have a vt100? At least, they could buy me a twenty year old 8088!!
But, I decided I wanted a GUI, and so I did it. I used the second serial
port on the back to run a standard microsoft mouse through it. I wrote a
special rom chip for the wyse so that it would intepret the mouse and send
the commands over the other serial port at 9600 baud. I wrote a program in
shell scripts to interpret the commands and open windows, display text icons,
etc. I even tried rewriting the i/o routines in the wyse's hardware for
different fonts, but that didn't work too well.
Oh, the screen has to be in 132 by 25 mode, and my shell scripts had to make
calls to some FORTRAN routines I wrote, but other than that, it was quite
a hack, to say the least!
My next project is to get postcript interpreters so I can use someone's NeXT
cube to drive my wyse50.
