[misc.handicap] BBS with deaf/hearing impaired SIG?

Greetings,

My company, KVUE-TV in Austin, is considering implementing a computer
Bulletin Board System (BBS) to serve the deaf and hearing-impaired
community in Central Texas. The system will use a special TDD modem,
enabling individuals equipped with a TDD to access the BBS.

Does anyone know of such a system already in operation anywhere in the
country, or of any BBS with a deaf/hearing-impaired SIG?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, as would suggestions and
ideas for this BBS.

Please mail replies directly to me: sparks@kvue.UUCP

Thank you for your help.

First, there are several BBS's that can handle both TDD's and regular
modems. Try:

1. HEX (The Handicapped Educational Exchange). This is the oldest
TDD compatible BBS around. Dick Barth is the sysop (and also
   participates in the Handicap Digest).
TDD and 300 baud phone number is (301) 593-7033
   1200 baud phone number is (301) 593-7357

2. Computer Clinic RBBS: Arthur Baker is the sysop and the phone
   number is (919) 834-0649

3. Mark Becker runs a BBS and the number is (407) 657-7011 (Sorry
I don't know the name of the BBS.)

4. S.I.R.E.N Netmail: Bonnie Goodwin is the sysop and the phone
   number is (916) 483-8624

(I have the feeling that I've left someone out but it's too late at
night and I can't remember who.)

As far as a deaf/hearing-impaired SIG, there is the SILENTTALK
Fidonet conference which is carried on many Fidonet BBS's and which
is also gatewayed with the Handicap News Usenet newsgroup and
the Handicap Digest mailing list. My BBS, the Handicap News BBS,
carries Silenttalk and can be reached at (203) 337-1607 (300/1200/2400
baud, but sorry, no TDD).

Hope this helps,
Bill
