Index Number: 6210 [This is from the Chronic Pain Conference on Fidonet] I would like to tell you that NLP is overrated, just as every quick cure discovery is overrated. I took a weekend with a *certified* NLP practitioner and I have spoken with a couple of other and worked with one as a co-worker. It is mostly just stage hypnosis in terms of its techniques. A lot of it seems to be raising momentary effects to the status of cure. On the weekend I went to the practitioner taught a participant a couple of communication skills and announced that her lifelong patterns had been changed and that she was a different person and that all this proved that NLP was a miracle of sorts. Bullshit, I have seen equally good interventions in intro psychology and even English classes. Even the name Neurolinguistic Programming is not what is really going on. I read Bandler and Grinder and found a few good idea well put and rehashed in readable language. But their book on hypnosis is garbage, where they do tiny things that most people could do and then Label the event as cosmic. This kind of thing gives psychotherapy a very bad name. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!250!626!Mortimer.Chudley Internet: Mortimer.Chudley@f626.n250.z1.fidonet.org
