We have been concerned with the plight of a friend who has become
disabled. He is an anesthesiologist with about 30 years of experience
who has rather suddenly becom physically disabled and is no longer able
to work in a hospital as an anesthesiologist. His disability: he cannot
stand for any period of time and he has to walk with two canes. Hhe
disability is not progressive. He is puzzled as to his options for
employment in his field or an allied field. He is about 58 years old.
would like information as to possible avenues of inquiry.

I'm missing something here. Why can't someone be a gas passer just because
he can't stand up? There has to be something else involved. I found a few
anesthesiology boards in Doctor Ed del Grosso's fine list, but only one of
them is a FidoNet board (Maybe they could get together and form EtherNet?
Nah!) Node 1:129/46 has never (?) left a message in ABLED so I don't think
they get it, but maybe one or more might be good for ideas and support.

Hi Marvin,
Some come to mind right away -
a) work in a newer hospital that is accessible. Use an Amigo (3 wheel
battery powered cart to get around)
b) do insurance review. This can be done at home on a contract basis.
They need physicians to do it. He can devote any number of hours to
it.
c) Expert witness and consultant to legal profession.
d) Researcher with drug company.
e) Teach?
f) Complete change of career (thousands of possibilities. Don't have
time to go into them here)
I don't understand though why this disability keeps him from working as
an sitting anesthesiologist.

Hi Marvin, What is it that about the lack of standing that has cost your
friend his job? If it is because he is to low to the equiptment if he is
seated when working, then there are some specialty wheelchairs that can
raise him to the height he would be standing. These specialized chairs are
battery operated and have lifts built into the seats that can raise a person
quite high, there are also specialized chairs and standing equipment that
will hold and support a person in a standing position. If this is the
problem let me know and I will give you the manufacturers numbers of this
type of equipment.

Could your friend go into some kind of teaching. It would seem like there would
be some kinds of positions for teachers in his field. Another option would of
course be hospital/medical administration kinds of work. You wouldn't have to
stand for either.
