Index Number: 6181 hAS ANYONE OUT THERE USED THE WORK INTICENTIVE PROGRAM ?? which SSi and SS provide for getting off the dole? I would be intrested in exchanging information with you. For those who do not know what this program is, ask your local Social Security for a copy of there current publication on the work incentive program. You may have to write the office in S.F. or the district office nearest you. That is the main office, not the branch office. I ran across this publication quite by accident. So do not expect the local office to have it on there selfs. The Social security people keep the existance of the work incentive a well hidden secret. It provides a way to save up a portion or all of you ss check and let SSi make up the difference between that amount and the maximum you are supose to recieve from a combination of the two checks. Nice,Hu? The money can be used for college, to return to work for yourself or to build up your reurves for other needs which will help u to go back to work. If this infomation is of any help, let me know. Call me at home,at 916 631 7174. Index Number: 6229 Hiya everybody! Couldn't believe my eyes when I logged on here after an information overload abscence and found an ABLED forum!! Yee Haw I'm home! >> hAS ANYONE OUT THERE USED THE WORK INTICENTIVE PROGRAM ?? >> which SSDI provide for getting off the dole?i and SS >> I would be intrested in exchanging information with you. I'm currently using the Program For Acheiving Self Support to get through a five year accounting program at Sonoma State University. It has been an absolute Godsend for me. I live almost like a real citizen because of it. It covers the cost of classroom related expenses only, but that includes the cost of auto insurance and maintenance because I need the car to get to and from school (the classroom). It also covers the odd book and other things that Vocational Rehabilitation doesn't cover (in CA the Voc Rehab has been mis-managed into almost total ineffectiveness). It has also bought me this terrific Macintosh, which allows me to keep up with the writing I need to do, but which also allows me to do stuff like this, even though it isn't classroom related. I got so carried away with it that I could probably get a job as a Mac consultant now, but don't tell anybody! If you have an achievable goal, the PASS program allows you to set aside SSDI money and/or earnings (any kind of income that would normally be deducted) into a special account, in amounts determined by a budget that you set at the beginning of the program. That money isn't counted as Income when your SSI amount is figured, so your SSI check rises by that much. I use it to shelter not only my SSDI but also the substantial scholarship that I *earned* and that would completely wipe out my SSI income twice a year if I had not been able to put it into the PASS budget. Hey hey hey, this is a great conference! Love ya all! (Elephant stew) -- Reed -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!125!7!Reed.Hopkins Internet: Reed.Hopkins@f7.n125.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 6281 Hi, U are right the SS program out here is just a facada for the public. It makes them think that they are helping people in the system. But it is killing its clients by fating them up and lulling them into believe- ing there is no other way than to live on the SICK (the ssi check). The PASS program is the best kept secret on the west coast! I was up North and worked as a counsler. After inquiring of everyone in,out and or the system, Not one person out of a few hundred knew of any program which could help SS clients return either to college or become self employed as this PASS program can do. It was only by divine conquence(grin) that I fond a SSi printing with the necessary infomation in it. As u can see my main limitation is in the area of spelling (grin) I am a adult with Learning Disabilities which prevent me from doing any work or sport which requires eye-hand type work, but Rehab?(grin) put me into electronics, big joke? So I was misable for a few years working at max speed and getting no-ware. For the last few years I have been wasting away, believing that there was no way out of tis dependenicy on the government. This PASS program has given me hope. I am returning to college and I soon will get my B.S. degree in Social Services. Then I hope to be able to go back and bring other people off Sick. Please keep in touch and let me know how u are doing in college. O,by the way,Spread the gospel of PASS around on the local BBS'S. So others will be able to see the light and gain hope of enternal freedom from the deadly cluches of this evil monster of SSI?. Yours IN Hope Michael J.
