[net.followup] Mark Horton "self-appointed guardian"?

glc@akgua.UUCP (G.L. Cleveland [Lindsay]) (04/14/84)

Steven Radtke ( really ! ) just made a nice comment to this
newsgroup about Mark Horton's efforts and time devoted to the
evolution and direction of this strange "usenet" entity. May
I add my endorsement to such sentiments.

However, I wish to take exception to Radtke's comment that Mark
is a "self-appointed" guardian. As one who was here when all this
started, I most emphatically deny that Mark set himself up in the
job! He got it by the (mostly silent) approbation and concurrence
of the rest of the net administrators. His even-handedness and
rational attitude, together with his fine capability for expressing
himself on a terminal, is an instance of a good man in the right
place at the right time doing the right things. What many of the
casual readers of the net are not aware of are the many private
discussions he has (via mail) with various administrators. When he
foresees a possible problem, he often heads it off by asking for
comments and suggestions from the site administrators which would
be affected.

So if you want to know how it came to be that he is the net
"conscience" and how he got the job, be aware that lots of us "too
busy" or "too lazy" site administrators dumped it on him!

  "HANG IN THERE, MARK!!"

Cheers,
  Lindsay
