Laurie, it's my understanding that those little chips only cost around 5
bucks, so I don't foresee any extra costs with the purchase of a new boob
tube. That is, nothing extra other than the raised prices of perhaps a new
set that has an 84 inch screen! Now, that's what I'd love to have....the
new Mitsubishi...

Ah...guess I can dream for a while! (grin)

Ah, but Ann, you know as well as I that the $5 chip will be
advertised as "NEW -- IMPROVED -- BUILT IN CAPTION -- NO NEED FOR A
BOX -- ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS PAY $100 MORE FOR THIS TV AND YOU HAVE
IT ALL!!!" (I know, I know -- I'm awfully cynical)

Don't anyone hold their breath waiting for this. It's probably
about 5 years away. And don't hold back getting a decoder box.
It is a shame, tho, to have to pay for an extra tuner and an
extra IR remote that you don't need with a decoder. Why not get
a TV with a simple tuner that can lock on channel 3 or 4, and no
remote. The savings could almost cover the decoder cost.

Yep, you sure are cynical but isn't everything new a bit more
costly? That is until the demand for such item goes up. I'll
admit I often go out of state, such as to Texas (which is only
46 miles from LawtonLand) to buy certain items and bypass the
sales tax. (smiles) And...they deliver FREE!

Yeah, if it would be only $10 to $20 extra. But I am pretty skeptical,
for it is likely that they would jack the price another 100 or more
for the tv with a decoder chip. However, in either case, it would
still be cheaper to buy one with a chip than one and a decoder separately.

Yes, this is what I was thinking, too. However, the more I think,
it would still be cheaper to buy a TV with a decoder chip even tho
if it is $100 extra. I remembered back in the early 80's, the decoder's
price was around $500 or more. And the same goes to the TDDs, too.
My friend bought a new tty for 1200.00 back in '73, so we can see
how much the cost has gone down since then due to the demand and supply
market.

I just hope that when the TVs with decoder chips come out into the
market, it wouldn't be so darn expensive like those new ones did years
ago. And then it would mean we would have to wait few years until
the price comes down to a more tolerable price.

Oh well, I think my decoder will live for another two or so years,
hopefully...

My hope is that TV manufacturers will not raise the price, but just
market the sets with the decoder chip as an extra feature. I believe
we will be seeing other new features, like windows, on more TVs. The
greatest benefit will be that, with a larger audience for captions,
more TV producers will invest in QUALITY captioning of their shows.

But, since it is in R&D now, we probably will not see it in the
stores for 4 or 5 years.

Jack.

... I never listen!

Laurie, I bought a one of the first decoders when they came out in
1981 and then it was only $250. Granted, I did think that high even
then but I don't recall ever seeing any for sale for $500. Now, I
do recall TDDs being a bit more costly, depending on the brand. My
parents bought several C-Phones for themselves and for us and they
were $750 then, the ones for us were $650. It was the policy to charge
the hearing people more for TDDs and sell them $100 cheaper for the
HI people. C-Phone, Inc. has since gone belly up but my parents are
still using their old C-Phone because they like the 26 inch screen.
Mine as well as my siblings old C-Phones have since gone kaputooey!

BTW, I'm still using the old original decoder on my spare TV. As long
as it works, why not? If the chips come out within a year or so on
the new TVs, I'd like to be the first on the block to have one. Uh...er...
that is on a Mitsubishi BIG screen TV. (grin)
