[misc.handicap] Lip reading on TV.

Not everyone can lip read and not everyone can lip read well. But,
I do believe it is possible for ANYONE to learn regardless of age.

I do not wear aids and never turn the sound on of my boob tubes since
I use the telecaptioned decoder. In fact, usually tell my friends
to adjust the sound for their convenience or either watch the tube
in silence with me. Makes one R*E*A*D....and can be FUN! You'd be
surprised at what an education that is for hearing people. They become
aware of what we don't get and they take for granted.

Hi, Ann.

AS> I do not wear aids and never turn the sound on of my boob tubes
AS> since I use the telecaptioned decoder.

I find myself doing the same more often than not. I've had my present
aids about two years now, and they are not nearly as effective as they
were when I first got them. Either they are wearing out, or I am :-)
Just had them in for a tune-up, but it didn't help.

But a number of my hearing friends have been quite interested in my
Telecaption decoder. One will probably get a decoder for his (hearing)
children, to encourage READING when they watch cartoons on Saturday
mornings.

I have also amazed hearing friends with the proof that all sighted
people lipread to some extent. I just have them watch the news, or
some other "talking head" show, with the audio as low as possible.
Then tell them to close their eyes and see if they can still hear
as well.

I wish the quality of captioning was a bit better controlled tho.
The quality of captions we get, even from the networks, ranges from
excellent to awful. ABC does the best job, then PBS and CBS, with
NBC having a lock on last place. The trouble is, some of my
favorite programs are on NBC.

Jack.

... Huh?

  Jack,

This is an understatement!! You know, there are times when I'd
be watching a good movie, then at the last half hour of the movie,
the closed captioning would stop. Just that! For a few minutes, I
would be sitting on the edge of a chair and straining to read the
lips on TV. Unfortunately, the lips were not always readable. I would
go nuts! It happened too often lately. CBS, NBC, and ABC probably
know my name by now because I have called and chewed them out pretty
often. (grin) Like you say, the quality of CC is dubious at best.
And it sure needs more improvement!

Hi, Jack! Great to see you back around. Guess you've been as busy
as I. Sometimes users on a BBS don't realize that the SysOps have
a life outside of BBSing. (grin

I've never been able to wear aids and I doubt if I could adjust to
them now if I could. Guess we tend to get set in our ways. I know
I do. I don't think I could even adjust to hearing sounds now if surgery
or even a cochlea implant would help. Nah, you're not wearing out...
remember, we're "well seasoned"....(HA HA)

A number of my hearing friends love my telecaption decoders. One very
close friend who is a remedial reading teacher thought it was wonderful
but he is like me, thinks the captioning could be improved. Usually
the series or sitcoms are not too bad but it's the live world news
that is really difficult to follow at times. I watch NightLine quite
a bit late at night and sometimes it gets rather hard to follow.
Ah...so your favorite shows are on the NBC network also. Mine are
LA Law and Matlock. I tend to watch the movies on HBO, ShowTime, Movie
Channel and Disney more than anything, especially those I've not watched
on videocassettes. I can hardly wait until "Born on the 4th of July"
and "Driving Miss Daisy" come out on video. Have heard they're both
wonderful movies. Have you seen them yet

I wish David Letterman or The Tonight Show were captioned. The very
close friend that I mentioned earlier (remedial reading teacher) taped
a Johnny Carson episode for me summer before last when my cousin, Bill
Clinton (Governor of Arkansas) was a guest. He then listened to it
and transcribed it to a file on his BBS for me to download. It was
wonderful as he even included all of the laughter, boo-hoos, applause,
etc! I know it took some real WORK on his part to do that.

Good for you, Laurie! That's the only way we'll get them to care
about the quality of the product they are dumping on us. It is a
good idea to complain to the sponsors also. They are the ones who
are paying for a quality product and not getting it.

NBC news captioning is terrible! We see it at 6:30 (eastern) time.
Some have said they clean up their act a bit for the later broadcasts.
Is it still as sloppy when it gets to California?

Jack.

AS> I've never been able to wear aids and I doubt if I could adjust
AS> to them now if I could.

I wear BTE BiCROS aids Ann, and I despise the infernal things. But
it would be difficult getting along without them. I keep reading that
better technology (digital) is just around the corner, but it sure is
taking a long time to turn that corner :-)

AS> I don't think I could even adjust to hearing sounds now if
AS> surgery or even a cochlea implant would help.

I know three people who have gone for the cochlea implant. Two had
near miraculous results and one was a flop. It would take lots of
courage to do it.

AS> A number of my hearing friends love my telecaption decoders.

I've experienced the same thing. Many of them had never even heard
of captioned TV until they saw mine. Do you have any fullscreen text
caption service in OK? Other than ABCs program listings which are
everywhere, I suppose. We have one text news service called PENNTEXT
which the UHF PBS channel carries.

Say, why are we doing this on disABLED? We must be boring the hearing
people to tears on this echo. Let's move to SilentTalk.

Watching Tom Brokaw this evening, the caption line reported that
a bus full of Israeli tourists had been attacked by "MOSS LIMB
FUNDAMENTALISTS". You gotta watch out for those Moss Limbs :-)
