Sheila, from the for what it's worth area. I recently spent a couple of
hours with Greyhound executives in Dallas and let them find out first
hand where many disABLED are thinking. I use that method to travel on
every week. Under their "new" guidelines we don't gain a thing. If one
plans to travel with a wheelchair you must notify them 72 hours in
advance. If it's a power chair they will now, supply an "approved "
battery box. At our meeting I pointed out to them that an AB didn't
have to give notice, Why should we ? The legal counsel agreed but no
change was made. You can supply your own attendant BUT are no longer
required to have an attendant. Most to the discussion centered on
the Dog's wanting to use a "Boarding seat" to load disABLED. To their
engineer my counter was to suggest a removable front barrier with flip
up seat and the use of a track system to load the disABLED patron chair
and all. They of course smiled their "Yuppie" smiles.
Frankly, we are involved in a battle for our civil rights. I agree that
the American's with Disabilities Act needs to be passed by the House.
That's why I'll be in Washington, DC from March 10-15 to meet with my
Congressman, even thou he's already a co-sponsor. Join me and the
American Disabled for Accessible Public Transportation in our "Wheel's
of Justice" action and let's get the ADA passed NOW!
