Hi,

My counselor teacher from Voc rehab was here yesterday and when I
told her that I had joined the N.F.B. she didn't seem particularly
enthusiatic about it all. I got the distinct impression that she
felt that the N.F.B. was too militant. I thought it was kind of
funny.

Is this common among other blind or V.I. here that belong to such
organizations and also have rehab counselors or is it just me? I
really have the feeling that N.F.B. people and Voc Rehab people are
not very fond of each other.

Keepin' the faith!

. Vixen

RM> Well, Voc.Re-hab people seems to have a mind of their own.
RM> From what i hear fom other disabled, they seem to prefer that a
RM> disabled person stay home and watch TV, rather than make the
RM> effort to educate themselves and go out for a job.
I had to stick my nose in here....You sure got that right about Rehab.
Here in Tennessee, if you make more than minimum wage you get dropped from
rehab in a second!!! My wife was suppose to get a computer to help her with
work but the state started dragging their feet when they learned of her
impending marriage. After we got married they stopped everything they were
doing for her. Cause I make too much money!!!! I may have a loophole though
They haven't notified her in writing or by phone yet that they were closing
   her file. Hmmmmm.....maybe....just maybe.....(evil grin)

I read your comments to Vixen about various social worker types trying
to discourage their clients from joining "militant" groups. Frankly, I
don't know ZIP about these various groups except what I've learned in
this echo the past year, but no matter WHAT groups these people are
putting down - I consider it a blatant violation of the disAbled
person's civil rights to discourage their joining up.

As for the "militance" of these groups, I can't see where any of them
have gotten two cents worth of action for their constituents, so it's
obvious they aren't being militant ENOUGH! Which is not to say, mind
you, that I have agreed with everything I've heard by way of demands
and political ideas. But they should be HEARD and openly discussed with
and by the people most concerned: the disAbled themselves.

Gallaudet University did the right thing and I think the effects were
quite salutory on the general population. I'm absolutely sure that more
people were more aware of the hearing impaired community after the
protests at GU than any social action since the release of Children of
a Lesser God.
