POSSIBILITIES FOR REDUCING LEG SPASMS:
1. Frequent Range of motion. drawback:Expensive if done by a
professional, time consuming, not covered by Medicare.
2. Reduce or eliminate any possible pain causing things.
Comfortable shoes, (always wear shoes) proper toe care,
proper skin care, get rid of any rashes between legs. Cath
regularly if unable to empty bladder, use good cushion when
sitting, use pad between plastic mattress sheets and top sheets,
make sure private parts are in comfortable position, pants
comfortable and loose (preferably with no rear pockets)
3: Electrical Stimulation such as REGYS or ERGYS Drawback
Expensive and time consuming. Neuro Muscular Stimulater
Drawbacks: wires and pads; Medicare does not pay for this
diagnosis. Electrical Implants? *NOTE* Researched for pain, no
statistics for SCI.
4: Tranquilizers. Drawbacks: Drowsiness, weakness, lethargy,
addiction, Aquired immunity.
5: Antispasmodics
A. Baclophin (Lioresal) Drawbacks: only works for some
individuals, can cause drowsiness, weakness, lethargy.
Addictive, withdraw in 24 hours (hallucinations, ceasures)
B; Dantrium. Drawbacks: Most Side affects, hazardous to
liver and kidneys. May not work Addictive?
6: Alcohol: Temporary, all alcohol side affects and hazards,
can cause spasms to increase next day.
7. Marijuana: Drawbacks: Illegal, hard to get, not covered by
insurance, can cause euphoric feelings, drowsiness, lethargy,
allergies, increase in appetite. Addiction?
8. Nerve Cut: Drawbacks: Permanent, may not stop spasms.
9. Ligament Cut: Drawbacks: Permanent, multiple operation
sights, muscle atrophy.
10. Amputation: Permanent, loss of legs, balance change,
altered physical appearance.
***All reduction of spasticity may cause increased circulation
problems, muscle atrophy, decalcification.***
