Betty, I am not "attacking" you. I am trying to get this
conference more focussed on whatever it claims to handle.

BD> Loneliness is a disAbled issue. I try to wipe it away

As an ex-professional HP, I and other people have methods beyond
tranqillizers and anti-depressants.

BD> Anger is a disAbled issue. I try to soothe it

We have methods for this eg "Burning it out", "Role Plays", ...

Also, when I work with real people, "soothing anger" is not
always the best thing to do, in the long run.

Whenever anyone experiences any kind of emotion, we should not
treat the emotion. Just as we don't treat the sin. Instead we
look at the WHOLE PERSON, and then do what is most appropriatefor
the whole person.

BD> Pain is a disAbled issue. I try to ease it,

I was interested in the Self-hypnosis being used by some. I
haven't experienced it. Also, acupuncture, music, etc.

There are many methods. We need discuss these, because it is too
expensive, too time consuming for EVERYONE to do "casework" in
this very public conference.

BD> Fear is a disAbled issue. I try to comfort,

There are several "therapies" and group processes for "Fear". If
there was enough room in this conference, lots of other people
(including myself) would like to contribute.

BD> Bitterness is a disAbled issue. I try to work
BD> through the bitterness, whenever I can.

Those of us who have worked with "Victims" over many years, know
by sheer expense, just how unrewarding this can really be.
Usually the best treatment is to introduce "psychological wealth"
into the person's life.

Given enough room in this conference, other people & I will
probably get around to discussing these techniwues.

BD>Isolation is a disAbled issue. I try to fill the void

That is why so many community agencies exist. I know the worth
of these - I ran one myself. But this here Fidonet conference
is an INTERNATIONAL conference.

BD> Lack of self-esteem is a disAbled issue.
BD> I try to reassure whenever I can.

If we can look beyond our own backyards, the enormity ofthe total
problem makes whatever we do look so hopeless.

Self-esteem is an enormous problem, that needs more than
well-meaning one-to-one work.

BD> Lack of tolerance is a disAbled issue. I work hard at being
 BD> tolerant.

The problem is far bigger than any one person can ever hope to
tackle ALONE.

BD> Lack of understanding is a disAbled issue. I seek to understand.

Solitary isolated work is not the answer. That is why today we
have mass media, computer conferencing, and Education
Departments.

BD> I leave you and your superior intellect to discuss and solve
BD> those issues. I work with what I have.

There is the OPPORTUNITY-COST involved.

Everyone messaging into this conference is contributing to the
enormous, unwieldy size of this total conference.

For people like Susan Sparkes, there are so many messages and
words being thrown around, it is hard to sort out what is most
relevant.

Ok. I understand that many disabled people are given the
understanding that their time is worthless, and that they are
worthless.

But most of us have enough self-respect to highly value our
lives, and to highly value our rarest resource: time.

I was hoping that this conference will stop being the case-work,
selfish, do-gooder help-line that it seems to be, and that it
will try to become a fully-fledged International Fidonet
Conference.

I realize that there are other networks besides Fidonet. For
example, GT-NET has "more human" computer conferences.

In my opinion, I think that GT-NET exists for those trapped in
the "My Backyard" mentality. They cannot handle the universal
vision of Fidonet.

If those wanting to one-to-one case-work are vocal enough,
perhaps another computerconference, called DISABLED HELPLINE
could be established.

If DISABLED HELPLINE was started, it might find a more
sympathetic hearing in GT-NET.

For those who are unaware of GTNET, try phoning a bulletin board
running a Robotics HST modem, and using GT POWER software.

I've used GT Power software for several years and I love it. I have
tried to use the others, i.e., ProComm + and the like, but keep going
back to GT Power. It's a wonderful term program. I'm glad to see
someone else using it.

Before I installed my BBS, I used to keep the host mode up of GT
Power so my friends could call and leave me messages. It sure beats
using the slow speed of a TDD and having to use a third party to
relay our messages.

I'm not trying to cut down TDDs as I know they are a necessity in
some instances as well as using a relay operator. I guess I just
prefer direct contact with people over the TDD operator and what
better way to do it than to use a CPU.
