>>BD> I don't understand these people! I know they exist, and I know
>>BD>they are abundant, but HOW can they do it? How can they live with
>>BD>themselves?

DZ> Betty, I hate to say it but I think this kind of treatment is
 DZ> almost commonplace.

I'm glad that someone else besides myself can see that this
conference is becoming filled with Sweet-Nothing messages.

DZ> when it comes to people doing what they say, memory gets awfully
DZ> short. I have quite a few friends that call and say let's go do
DZ> this or that and never show up. I beleive it when I see it anymore
DZ> and half of the time I just let it pass in one ear and out the
DZ> other. A good 80% of said things never come about.

There is something odd about these people who try to impose
their Sweet-Nothing world onto us, the REAL people. You are
describing a reality that I have seen, and lots of other people
described to me as well.

At this stage, I'm wondering: "Why is there such strong
resistance to allowing Disabled People (& others) from describing
their world"?

It has to do with some kind of censorship process. Something
like:

        "NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS!"

As long as the air is full of fairy-floss and Sweet-Nothings,
these very intolerant people can continue pretending that
reality does not exist.

This is very relevant to the disability industry, because of the
low-regard and the low-status that the general population gives
to disability. If we can better understand WHY these
Reality-cripples exist, then our battle to share our true-lives
will be half-won.

As it stands now, because of the direct and indirect censorship
put onto Disabled People, the true stories are being buried with
sickening layers of fairy-floss.

PM> Greg, I know what you are saying in terms of the disabled needing
PM>to take a political stand, and that just caring is not enough.
PM>However, as much as we need political action to take place in order
PM>to change things, none of us can function at all without knowing that
PM>there are people out there who love and care for us. Sometimes, we
PM>need encouragement, and sometimes we need hugs.

The truth is, most people won't have the energy or desire to fight
on the political front unless they are getting nurtured from somewhere.
The only alternative is to become embittered and to fight just for
the sake of fighting. I think Greg is embittered, and that he fights
political battles for that reason, but you cannot win in politics
that way. People won't listen to you unless you are responsive to
them.
I would think this is especially true of the disabled. Because so
many of us ARE more dependent than most people, we need the affirmation.
I see this echo as providing a vital function in this way.
  Pat
