Well, I lived through another church board meeting!! People wonder
why I am as short as I am, they ought to attend some of these
meetings where I get "cut down" for asking for money, they would
never ask again! It is difficult to lead the battle when the ones
you are fighting for don't appear to be very interested. We are in
the process of approving plans to renovate our educational and
social wing to make it comply with fire saftey and handicapped
accessibility. It is an old building with NO way to get in without
going up or down a flight of stairs and is 4 floors without an
accessible bathroom in the structure. What is making the fight
difficult is that I am the only "acknowledged" handicapped person
in the congregation. There are probably 30 to 40 who can not use
that building because of the stairs or because of the bathrooms who
are older members of the congregation, but they are not
"Handicapped"! The amazed look that I got from the architect when
I told him that I would like to see the renovated building without
a door knob in it was priceless. "But, YOU don't have any problems
with turning a door knob, do you?" Not to mention how I lost his
attention when I mentioned the idea of rails in the hallways! "You
need to talk to the Renovation Committee about that, I only do what
they tell me to." If only the ones who need to use the new
features were not the opposed to spending the money! I can not
understand why people can not acknowledge the problems with failing
health and then DO something about it other than withdraw
completely.

Well, I had better stop this now. At least I have been successful
in getting these things put into the plans, even over the
objections of a former trustee. This gentleman reminds me of
someone on the this echo whom we all love and admire :>. He has a
brain tumor that makes him very irrational at times and he has come
to have a fixation on certain topics, at which he becomes vehement
and almost violent.
